They seem to be doing so much better, day by day as they're no longer in the presence of their ex.

Here and there, communications (lawyer-mediated) will throw them back into a state like they were in the presence of the ex, and the difference is dramatic. But that's not their daily life anymore. They get to be (relatively) happy and carefree. I like this person. I like this person a lot. It's like they get to be the beautiful, brave, gentle, and fierce person that I first met in person these few years ago, except all the time.
