I think what bothers me about the G+ naming policy is how condescending it is. We The Google have decided that pseuds and nicks are bad, so we're not going to let you use them. Your choices and opinions don't matter to We The Google. We The Google are the only one who can judge you.

I'm honestly >this close< to just deleting my profile and calling it all a bad job.

So far I have spent 29 years on Planet Earth (and its otherplanar sister-planet, Planet Blogosphere) without joining anything under My Real Name; and I intend to carry on that way, because it seems to be working. So far no one has stolen my identity or fiscal information, harassed me over some past real or imagined slight, found out about my fanfiction hobby, learnt inappropriate details of my sexual identity or reading habits, or tracked me down in order to shove daily nonupdates about their sproggen down my throat... I think I'd like that state of affairs to continue! :D If it means living without a new Google product, well, I'll just have to suffer the loss. Woe. (sarcasm!mode)

[personal profile] mad_maudlin's above comment about Google's naming policy reading as condescending reminds me of the gigantic wankstorm in some online RPG fandom when the PTB decided that only real names could be used on the forums... Let's hope it ends the same way.

(The best summary anyone made of that mess was, paraphrased, "This does not eliminate bad behaviour on the forums. It only ensures that bad behaviour will have more serious consequences." I wholeheartedly agree, and any company that wants to convince me otherwise can suck it offer its refutational reasoning on a public, anonymous forum for my consideration, or else accept that the current objections are valid.)
