I do not feel like I got a particularly good hand in genetics poker, and my eldest cousins on both sides of the family have reproduced. I feel like my memes are much more important than my genes, and furthermore that I would do a poor job at providing the kind of loving/nurturing environment that a baby requires without absolutely cracking, which serves nobody well. Add the body horror of pregnancy to that (and the fact that I have a close friend who nearly died of pre-eclampsia; the doctors were willing to let her die and she miscarried even after all that) ... and with the state of general reproductive horror in the US I am just ... no, no, no, no no. I cried on Don Young's answering machine.

I feel like my memes are much more important than my genes

The perfect way to phrase it! I agree -- I've volunteered to be the Cool Aunt to my friends' (eventual) children, once they're verbal and continent. And there's no way I could provide the things a baby needs; nor is there the slightest bit of interest on my part in doing so, even if I could. I don't relate to them at all; that gives me little incentive to sacrifice my health and time for their survival. There's a reason my username is reptilian. *grins*

Egad, your poor friend. D: The state of reproductive health in the U.S. is truly frightening. (You are also dead-on with the "body horror" thing! It's why I intend to be sterilised even though I'm asexual and celibate -- any chance that it could happen to me, however slight, is horrifying.)
