This poor guy posted on not!Facebook that the Outlook for Mac was basically
unusable, and started getting all kinds of static from tech bros who
couldn't believe he was having the sorts of issues he was having. So I
posted an admonishment there to the effect that this guy can turn up
usability problems that even I couldn't discover, and dropped the canary on
his desk. He should discover it on Thursday.
Apparently when it needs to download attachments, it does so 20 at a time, the progress bar going from 0 to 20 as many times as it takes. Not from 0 to like 35,480 or however many attachments he has accumulated over the course of his tenure here at Virtual Hammer. Nope. 0 to 20. There were other things, but that was the one that I was hearing about the most.
I have the gift of running into the weird thing, noticing it, exploring its parameters and figuring out its dimensions and how to replicate it, complaining about it (often in a useful fashion), and continuing with my day. This guy has the gift of running into the weird thing, noticing it, and running smack up against it without being able to devise an alternate workflow. He is a dear and I have heard very few complaints about his management style, but he and tech have their Moments. (One of the complaints about his management style is that he goes into I Cannot Juggle Any More Balls, Please Stop Sending Me Balls mode earlier than my long-suffering and very patient manager, and may wind up needing scraped off the ceiling. Hardly the worst of manager flaws.)

I forwarded this to a friend who does IT stuff. I think he'll get a kick out of it, too.
Your workplace hijinks are always amusing. :>

This is not a guy who adapts well to technological change. On the other hand, the Outlook 2011 devs may not have been re-educated enough.
