Oh yes. I managed to put a CD-ROM in slightly crooked and when the drive spum up, I heard terrible cracking noises. By the time I got it stopped and opened, the CD was in several pieces. And I couldn't get a couple of them out of the drive: they had fallen back amongst the gears. Had to take the PC into my service guy and have him take it apart. Luckily he got all the pieces out and the drive itself wasn't damaged.
My service guy didn't actually take the drive apart, either. He removed it from the PC and shook it in various attitudes such that the remaining pieces of the CD fell out. Luckily, the CD broke into fairly large pieces, so it was easy to determine that all of them were recovered.
And there was no damage to the drive itself. It is currently working fine.
We took Red apart, took the offending drive out, and defragged it in just that manner. We think we have all of the shards out... we'll see when it turns on...
