azurelunatic: Quill writing the partly obscured initials 'AJL' on a paper. (quill)

Meme: userpic survey (rather too fannish for me)

How many icons do you have in regular rotation, for your livejournal posts or for other similar fannish activities?

I have fifteen different icons, the max for permanent users. Of those, I use maybe five most often.

How did you choose them? Do you associate different icons with different moods? Different fandoms? Different post topics? Something else altogether? Or do you just rotate them at random?

I choose the icons for different moods and topics. There are several that I use for my default icon, depending on how I'm feeling. If I'm feeling particularly literary, I use my quill pen icon. If I'm feeling manic, I use the "Azzgrin" icon. I don't make enough fandom posts to have an icon associated with those; if anything, it would be the quill. There are two icons associated with specific fandoms: the "greensad" icon, from Douglas Adams' death, and the Kirk/Spock goodbye icon from The Wrath of Khan. See next question for the uses of all the icons...

What are your icons images of?

Mixed bag. From the top of the current list:

greensad
Greensad: the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy green guy, holding a spotted towel to dry tears. I made this icon to commemorate the death of Douglas Adams, and I use it for depressed and angsty posts.

High Energy Magic
High Energy Magic: a stick figure casting a large energy bolt, with appropriate warning message. Made this icon at the height of the "Make your own warning signs" meme. I use it for posts having to do with magic, religion, and Weird Shit.

quill
Quill: A quill pen writing my initials on paper. Can't remember when I made this one. I use it for posts having to do with writing and reading. Most of my fan posts go under this icon, as I am primarily a text-fan.

Spock
spock: Snagged this movie screen capture off the web. Shrunk it. It is badly shrunk. I must re-do this one someday. I used it, in the past, for situations of either extreme anguish, or extreme depth of friendship, because this moment represents both.

wild rose
Wild Rose: Snagged this image off the web and shrunk it. I use it for posts involving tender emotions and potential romance, or when I'm feeling shy, or sweet, or something like that. This is not one of the often-used images in my journal; it is [livejournal.com profile] rosalynde's default icon. I suppose I use it for posts about [livejournal.com profile] ectogenesis as well.

Darkside
Darkside: Snagged the screen grab from Gunsmith Cats and the pic of Darkside from Darkside Blues off the web; took the photos of my best friend Darkside; put it all together. I use this icon for posts and comments talking about my best friend Darkside, or moments when I need the reminder that wherever I go, he's near. I suppose I could also use this icon for talking about anime fandom, but haven't really done so yet.

Loud Fayoumis
Loud Fayoumis: Another picture from the web. This is Amoral, the pet hen of someone I don't know. She's a dead ringer for the attitude of Calico, though, and is a shining example of the breed at their most raucous and interesting. I use this icon for posts where I'm being loud, being bitchy, talking about chickens, ranting about something... anything that would make me open my beak very wide.

Francine
Francine: From the Strangers in Paradise website. This is my favorite comic, and I do look eerily like Francine IRL, to the point where people ask me who drew that picture of me... This is my current default icon. I use it when I'm feeling pretty and sexy, or maybe a little airheaded or overemotional.

Divine Oscillations
Divine Oscillations: Made this icon on a whim, with the original idea of a vibrator powered by Pikachu batteries. Wound up with this, which is pretty damn cool. The name comes from my Sith Academy fandom, actually, which is a nod to Good Vibrations. I use it for posts involving sex, masturbation, mindfucking, and just plain wanking.

Best friends forever
Best friends forever: Constructed this myself, from the Kirk/Spock pic, and two photos of Darkside and me taken by [livejournal.com profile] votania. Darkside and I are incredibly close friends, and I would have a difficult time without him. We may not have a romance, but if we were characters, our fans would so write smut about us... I use this icon for posts involving the friendship and closeness that Darkside and I have, or posts/comments where I just need to know that he's there...

Azzgrin
Azzgrin: Manipulated this picture from my original blue-haired userpic. I use it for manic moods, or very funny things.

Azure Lunatic
Azure Lunatic: This is version 1.2 of my original LJ userpic. I drew it myself, and then tweaked it several months ago. This is one of the pictures I rotate as default. These days, I use this one when I'm feeling withdrawn or mysterious.

Nine
Nine: My mother took this picture of me and Calico when I was about nine. Note the gawdawful orange couch from my dad's bachelor pad before he got married. I use this one for talking about chickens and reminiscing about when I was little.

Ritual
Ritual: Another picture from about the same time as the one with me and Calico. This is for things less stressful and more peaceful than the High Energy Magic usericon.

Little Fayoumis/Nephew
Nephew/Little Fayoumis: The local kid. Used for posts about him.

If you've chosen images or manips of yourself, are they images that might enable a stranger to recognize you if she saw you on the street? As a corollary, do you post under a persona (fannish or otherwise) or under your real name?

People can recognize me from the pictures of me. I use my first two names, but leave the last name out of all but my actual filking.

Do you identify with actor or character images in your icons? If so, do you identify more with images of actors, or images of fictional characters?

I certainly identify with Francine. I identify with characters far more than actors; characters have half a chance of having a normal life and a somewhat similar personality.

Do you have multiple fandoms?

Yes, but they're not very well-represented in my icons.

Do you make your own icons? If not, how do you get them?

I make many of them, and find little scraps of picture that I like around the net otherwise.

Do you notice "icon families," like the range of "Zen Fen" icons on livejournal these days? If so, do you have reactions to them? Do they make you feel included, excluded, or neither?

"icon families"? *shrug* I don't travel in many fannish circles, though I'm sure many of my friends are Extreme Fen. So I haven't really noticed... This does not make me feel excluded; it's yet another sign of a culture that's not mine.

Do you think icons or icon families show fannish status? If so, how?

*boggle* I'm not sure how to answer this.

Do you recognize friends or acquaintances by their icons? Do you associate certain images with certain people?

Oh, very definitely. [livejournal.com profile] lasayla's mother quit reading her friends page because of the graphic journal entries associated with a certain blue-haired journalist... I blink and do doubletakes if I see the same icon that one person uses used by another person.

Do you use icons to comment on the state of your fandom or your fannish obsessions?

If I had an active fandom, I might... I would really truly like an icon with Miles and Sgt. Overkill, and an icon of That Ass Tien dropping the flowerpot... Hm. Maybe I should cartoon a Miles set of ten icons for grabs...
