The Xenosaga series is going to slowly but surely explain everything prior to the Xenogears story. Basically mankind found this artifact in Kenya (which is this huge yellow cross called a Zophar) that ended up obliterating the world, taking it apart fairly quickly. So 4000 years later, mankind completely lives in space where they're trying to find the Zohar (for some reason unexplicable to me at this point), all the while battling against these "phallic monsters" called the Gnosis. Humans can't really kill the Gnosis because they attack from an alterior spiritual plane. So they started inventing an android (which apparently is passe at this point in time. They now use Realians which are real humans with android mechanisms -think Matrix humans-) by the shorthand name of KOS-MOS. KOS-MOS is capable of utilizing the Hilbert Effect, which pulls the Gnosis into their plane of existance, allowing humans to be able to have a good shot at defeating them.
As far as the purpose past anything there...I still have yet to find out. Because in Xenogears, humans live on a planet (which focuses more on the aspects of finding the Gear that can defeat God), where they use the Gears (they're called A.G.W.s in Xenosaga and aren't the focus point like in Xenogears) to fight against the authorities of Solaris, this mysterious floating city...etc.
Storywise, Xenosaga ep.1 and Xenogears have a lot in common (the characters in Saga parallel to those in Gears, as well as there's one female in the game that you don't play that is the key to this entire game...but we still have no clue who she really is.), but lack the plot commonality in them so far. The guys who created Xenogears have this entire story figured out, so there will be more volumes of it released that eventually lead up to the Xenogears game, where everything is supposed to FINALLY make sense. But basically, even when you beat Xenogears, no one had a CLUE as to what was completely going on. I think that was the main intention of the Xeno-team. So even I still cannot say entirely what the game is about. So this really isn't a series like Final Fantasy, Lunar or Chrono Trigger where you can just pick any version of the game up, play it, and understand what's going on. You have to play it all to know... which makes, in my opinion, the Xeno series one of the most difficult series that one can play because even the gameplay requires that the player has had some sort of previous console RPG experience to play it almost. But if you do pick it up, it has a GREAT story! You still might not know what's completely going on (all the puzzle pieces don't fit in certain areas because the game purposely leaves it out), but what you DO end up understanding is absolutely awesome. ^_^ I hope that helped a litle bit. ^_^*
