More than 1 color: red, yellow and white. Stay away from the frou-frou colors that might make him the butt of jokes -- pink or lavendar. All one color or more straightforward/primary colors are the way to go.

Hm. Maybe I should wander over to the local grocery and locate a single red rose, making it 25 in total, and that being "one to grow on".
