It *is* news that emotional and physical pain do similar brain things.

It is *not* news that emotional pain is real, nor is it news that emotional pain has actual physiological results.

And he does the emotional thing, and then he's surprised when a certain someone ducks and flinches when he's spoken to in a manner as if there's a problem.

I have seen the flinching in question, and it's a normal kid "what the hell did I do" / "I sure screwed up big this time" face.

He used to cover his ears and cringe when corrected.

Kids need to feel safe and loved with their adults[1]. Adults need to have ways to indicate to kids that certain behaviors are bad without having to metaphorically shout because the kids have learned to tune out the normal voice equivalents.

[1] I don't know what to call this set, but it's broader than parents. Adults important in a kid's life, maybe?

It's not even that. Marx is interpreting LF's normal "Eeek, I'm in trouble" face, which every kid has a variant on, and interpreting it as an "Eeek, you're going to hurt me" face.

And then he's telling him not to make that face because he's not going to get hurt.
