To me, BDSM is a lot about stretching boundaries, the sub doing things with the dominant that s/he wouldn't necessarily be doing with anyone else, or out of that headspace, or with someone who wasn't trusted.
Part of maintaining the trust, though, is knowing the difference between what your sub secretly wants to do but has been afraid to try, and what s/he won't do under any circumstances, and what s/he might like to do, but would be physically or mentally too dangerous. Some are boundaries that the sub has; if the sub lacks any of them, the dominant must make up for them. It's a lot about psychology, knowledge, and trust.
