It's very rare that a piece of writing disturbs me so badly that I have to stop reading it. I can't handle the reality of what goes on in revolutions and under extremist governments.
Please try not to take this personally. I am just going through another stage of being annoyed with the U.S. in general. The first thought that came to me was "the people who can't handle the reality of what goes on in revolutions are the ones who most vocally demand the overthrow of this or that foreign government."
This does not necessarily apply to you. I have seen enough to know that you are an emphatic and thoughtful individual. Just now you, unfortunately, had to be the stand-in for the "generic American."
After I've slept for a few hours, now, I think that I will be able to finish the book, but only after my latest personal emotional wounds have settled down.
The last other thing I had to stop reading was Orson Scott Card's essay about same-sex marriage and why it's wrong. That was for reasons of bile rather than reasons of pain, though.
After I settle out and stop hurting so much myself (personal life issues) I'll be fine to continue this one. I'm afraid that I won't be able to read the OSC essay for a good long time.
I think perhaps as well that "generic American" would be more disposed to say "That can't be true" or "This book sucked" rather than "I can't handle this".
