Father's Day

Why does Father's Day not get half the bad press that Mother's Day does? On Mother's Day you've got the sincere sentiment, and you've got all the people who wish they could just quietly ignore the day, but they're feeling pressured by the Media-Based Marketing Machine to do something to celebrate it, even if they fucking hate their insane bitches of mothers. So there's a whole lot of resentment around it, same with St. Valentine's Day.

But Father's Day seems to slide by without any grudgery if it's not actively celebrated. I wonder why that is.

it is easier to Not Take Seriously something that involves so many cheesy things like ties with golf tees all over it than it is something that floods us with sentimental bids for tear-jerking moments of "awww" everytime we turn around.

mother's day: greeting cards with roses and soft-focus betterflies and a stepped-up campaign by the jewelers' association.

father's day: soap on a rope and novelty romote holders and things printed with cheesy fly-fishing, golf or hardware-store motifs.

heh

More people know who their mothers are than know who their fathers are. It makes it easier to create a guilt trip holiday. That, and our society has this misconception that your mother always loves you no matter what. For some reason, we don't have the same societal lie about fathers. We know they can turn out to be bastards whom their children would be better off without.
Ahh, the myths of our age.

This is just my experience so forgive me if I'm overgeneralising, but mother's tend to guilt trip children into making a fuss, or sulk if a fuss is not made. Fathers are happy with a nice pair of cufflinks and a card, and won't make a fuss if nothing amazing happens on Father's Day. Which is why I appreciate my Dad so much :D
