Musicals have sort of become mainstream lately though.
Mulon rouge. Rent. Chicago. The producers (The movie based on a musical based on a movie about a musical.) (Yay Mel Brooks) Along with all the disney movies. Almost all of the recent animated disneys movies can be called musicals.
About the only thing I think stopping musicals from being mainstream is a large release movie that parodies musicals. (Nothing has been recently to my knowledge that would fit.)
As for the gayness of rent. Gay main characters, largely gay issue (Aids) even though a point of the movie is that it isn't just a gay problem.
So while I don't think it is Gay in of itself it has a gay side that it is touch with.
And just because....
A gay guy gradualy grew greatly gayer granting grandmas gayly garnished gifts.

I said it over there and I'll say it over here: it breaks the brain more if you say that 5 times fast while imagining a garlanded Tom Cruise.
It does look like the market is right for a massive parody film, doesn't it. Makes you wonder what it'll be.

While it is a parody its not exactly what I was refering to.
