In earlier times in international sports events it was often seen that the foreign host was using this rule to spell Finnish names, and thus, becoming a subject of ridicule for the Finnish audience. It is recommended against; it is usually better to just omit the dots if the system of text production has an aversion for diacriticals and umlauts. Only in a case where there is clear and present danger of unresolvable ambiguity can the "ae" for ä or "oe" for ö be tolerated. And most current text production systems do support diacriticals and umlauts.
