Summary: [site community profile] dw_news presents: "The Search for Enlightenment"!

New [livejournal.com profile] news is good [livejournal.com profile] news!
[livejournal.com profile] deflatermouse: "We talked to Google and Yahoo, and frankly, their search would totally suck on LJ, because LJ is frickin' huge and frickin' weird, and we know our meta-data better than they do. OMG I know our users and their habits far too well, which means I'm the perfect one to be right in the middle of all this, where "this" is "building a search engine for LJ", complete with a few tantalizing technical details. Also, we're going to start pre-announcing the stuff we're putting out, unlike ninjas, which we will never see coming."

Pirate Users: "We are so much cooler."
Concerned Users: "Can we restrict who gets to see what? Can we block it?"
[livejournal.com profile] burr86: "Yes! You'll be able to turn off LJ Search indexing, and unlike other robots and spiders, LJ will actually respect that."
Information Hors: "What about searching my locked entries?"
[livejournal.com profile] burr86: "Search away, me hearties! If they can see it, they can search it; if they can't see it, they can't search it. Simple as that."
Permanent Users: "Hey, how come we're the guinea pigs?"
Users who have Been Around A While: "Just so long as it's better than LJSeek, because that bites."

Trolls: *troll the post*
Pirates and Ninjas: *gang up together and present a united front, clobbering the fuck out of the trolls*
Spanish Inquisition: *is much less expected than the ninjas*

Non-Technical Users & Users who have Come Late to the Party: "OMG I don't want people able to search my stuff."
Users who have read the post: "Dude, it says right in there that you'll be able to turn it off."
Non-Technical Users: "Oh, was THAT what that was supposed to mean? Cool!"
User Behaving Badly in Public: "What about communities? It sounds like if someone wanted, they could search and find all the nasty comments I've written in communities and stuff over the years. I'm not sure I like this so much."

Yay! We like your summaries.

I'm also thinking buying [livejournal.com profile] deflatormouse a drink when he gets it working would be good, seeing as he lives in the same place I'm moving to.

I gave up on comments very early on that one, far too many people hadn't actually read the damn post for me to have time to get the clue stick out.

Yeah that was pretty much the best announcement ever. Well other than a permanent account sale on a day that I actually have internet access. THAT would be the best ever.

You forgot the "Repeat sixty more times."

[livejournal.com profile] deflatermouse described the process of designing this as: "and then I went off to the pub, scribbled a lot of depressingly large numbers on the back of a pub napkin, put my head down on the bar, and cried".

I think he totally needs a drink. :)

Oh, and:

People with more pretentiousness than sense of humor: "You spelled your username wrong!"
People with more sense of humor than pretentiousness: "That's the point, numbskull."
People who might have pretentiousness or sense of humor, but lack a liberal arts education: "....What?"

Die Fledermaus is a Strauss opera. Simon's username is punning on it -- people were all "omg! you spelled it wrong!"

It should not come as a surprise to me that there are people like your class "User Behaving Badly in Public". But it still does. If you believe what you say, then you should not be worried about someone reading it later. If you don't believe what you say, then you should not be saying it. And it always pays to be nasty in high-class ways, instead of bullyish and such.

And usually mispelling it differently in the process. (Oh, and for some reason, my brain insisted against all available evidence that it had to be by Richard Strauss, not either of the Johanns.)

If it weren't for the getting lost in the ocean of commentary, I'd have soooo been applauding that "pre-announcing" announcement. :) If I'm ever in the same part of the world with these folks, I will definitely have to buy them a round of drinks for finally realizing that would be a good idea.
