I was thinking about this and I believe the reason he even still ran was that if he was elected, but booted out of the Senate, then Palin gets to appoint a replacement. A Republican replacement.

No she doesn't. After Murkoski appointed his daughter to his old senate post they pushed though a law that now requires a special election, no more governor appointees.

Current rumor is that Stevens is going to resign, and Palin is going to run in the special election, or possibly her husband.
