I have the original version ("Kitty" - it was on Racey's first album Smash & Grab but not released as a single) and it makes perfect sense when a guy sings it. I think the basic problem was that when Chapman and Chinn re-arranged the song for Toni Basil in 1981 they just replaced the name Kitty with Mickey and did a superficial cleanup of the lyrics. Hence the 'take it like a man' line not being changed, etc.

I spent the longest time trying to figure out from the voice whether White Town's "Your Woman" was being sung by a man or a woman, because it's different kinds of interesting interpreted either way.
