Your replies are confusing me greatly, and I hope I have misunderstood you, because it now sounds like you are saying:

1) adult content is not OK (and I'm fine with this, particularly given that the provider you've chosen for this forum doesn't allow adult content, plus there's the average age of the fandom to think about)

2) same-sex relationships are NOT ok

3) opposite-sex relationships ARE ok, provided it's PG-13 or under

Firstly we dont post it here we link.

1) Yes its pretty much PG-13 is the limit (12A if you are engilsh)

2) Yes and I do not want to sound bad for saying this but Slash on forums starts and ALWAYS starts shipping wars. Can not let that happen.

3) Yes.

These are the rules I am sorry but we have marm fish for that.

Well then. So long and thanks for all the fish.

Because there are never 'het-ship' wars? Buffy/Angel vs. Buffy/Spike anyone?

Oh, ironies. He thinks that he can avoid ugly issues by banning slash, instead he creates it. Bet he'll blame it on craaaaaaazy slashers still, though.

Even plain forum abandonment is an ugly issue that he'll want to blame on something after such an auspicious start.

I'm sorry, but het-shippers always have the ship wars, because they know there's this unwritten rule that any female character in a series on TV or a big book series eventually has to give it up to one of the main guys, women are not just allowed to work with men or be friends with them.

And then they always say that WE are not with the respect for the power of platonic friendship (between men, because that only happens between same-sex pairs, opposite-sex pairs must have sexual tension). Oh heteronormativity you make my brain hurt hard.

And yet now it's anti-feminist to not ship het or something, IDK, I hear more about this from Tif than anyone, which is funny because she actually does ship het and I practically never do, because I see heterosexuals. They're everywhere. They don't even realise they're heterosexual. (They just think they're normal.)

I don't usually ship canon het though, usually because it is almost always between two people who for reasons of professionalism/friendship/ethics should not be fucking.

See also:
Sam/Jack (not to mention, they couldn't make it believable)
Uhura/Spock (I can live with teacher/student, I can live with military fraternisation, but not both in the same damn pairing)
Scully/Mulder (I liked her better when she was a sceptic)
Hermione/Ron or Hermione/Harry (and I don't much care for the fans)

And so on.

Ron/Hermione vs Harry/Hermione. Also known as: the only sane people in HP fandom are slashers.

I may be missing something in fandom, b/c I'm not a huge participant, but, can someone name me a 'slash' ship war?

I'm not saying there haven't been any, just that I can't think of any off the top of my head.

The Ray Wars of Due South fandom were reportedly violent. I imagine the combatants weren't exclusively slashers, though.

You're right, 'ship wars among (or involving) slash pairings are not that common. It's just so much easier to ignore undesired non-canon 'ships (which most slash 'ships are) than it is to ignore 'ships that are undesired but canonical or potentially canonical (which most het 'ships are, thanks to the rarity of strictly gay/lesbian characters and to the men-and-women-cant-be-platonic-friends rule that a lot of fictional works subscribe to).

Admittedly, I'm a non-shipper, so I, not only don't get involved in ship wars, I don't actually follow them either. I know they exist, b/c I 'hear' about them, but I don't get involved.

Mostly - b/c I don't understand why people feel the need to hinge their like / dislike of a show on which two people are screwing on- or off- screen. My default position is 'who gives a shit?' Not that I don't speculate about who is or isn't finding time to sneak into a janitor's closet or off on a getaway, but that my enjoyment of the show/movie/whatever isn't contingent upon a specific pair of people 'hooking up'.

I've actually seen people comment along the lines of 'Well, I've given up on show [x] because my 'ship is no longer potentially canon'. Really? I mean - really? There aren't any other redeeming factors to the show? I thought that's what fanfic was FOR. Exploring those possibilities that don't get explored on the show.

I'll stop before I get really ranty.... XD

If a certain writer left the show, taking their clever dialogue with them, would you sneer at people who gave up on the show then? If a certain actor left the show, taking their intriguing character with them, would you sneer at people who gave up on the show then? If a certain integral plot thread got hijacked and subjected to alien probes or just forgotten entirely, would you sneer at people who gave up on the show then? Clearly if that plot thread was a romantic relationship, you would. I'm trying not to get ranty myself, but I'm judgmental about people being judgmental. In the words of Tom Lehrer, I know there are people in the world who do not love their fellow human beings — and I hate people like that!

Because there are never any het shipping wars?

I'm sure that hasn't been hashed out to death or anything. Idiot.

[identity profile] khasael.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm out of there.

Also, now that song is stuck in my head, complete with visuals of flipping dolphins. I will be humming that all morning. I need to reread that.

And seriously, like there won't be shipping wars between het pairs? Here I am thinking of the one fandom I'm really kind of a part of. There's a love quadrangle (it was a proper triangle for a couple of years, but it's definitely a full-fledged quadrangle now), and man, does it get UGLY.

[identity profile] khasael.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Out for today. Tomorrow, when I do not have a zillion things to do before the 2 hour bus ride and quick job of cleaning for someone, I will do the proper flounce. I shouldn't even be online right now. It also gives me some time to think about exactly what I want to say, because right now, it mostly consists of punctuation marks, and virtually no words.

[identity profile] khasael.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, while I had a few moments, I replaced my intro post with [deleted by the author], and there is a link to the marmfish forum in my signature, along with a Voltaire quote ("Common sense is not so common").

[identity profile] altogetherisi.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What an idiot. I mean, APART FROM the homophobic angle, and the ridiculous angle, has he actually read the book?! One sided Jamie/Nick is FREAKING CANON. Ack.

[identity profile] greenfaeriedust.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Urgh. That made no freaking sense. I understand forbidding adult content of ANY nature, because of possible younger readers. But specifying Slash because it causes arguments is pathetic. The most hysterical fandom argument I have viewed involved Harry/Hermione and Ron/Hermione.

I don't think I have ever viewed an argument started because the topic was 'slash'. Unless a hater became involved. I am very confused, especially since one of the main characters is homosexual in canon. Does he read the book with his eyes closed? *rant over* Sorry. :)

[identity profile] hanelissar.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to do a flouncing (except a dignified flounce because we are marmfish. We do not do hysterical.) response but then I just couldn't find it within myself to be tolerant and polite to him. No matter how hard I tried, a little bit of scathing anger always slipped in. So I've replaced my post (my one teensy post - I totally failed to get into that forum anyway!) with a [deleted by the author] and am never going there again. Unless he posts a response to your message Azz, in which case I will want to know what he says!

It just angers me so. And saddens me too, that he can have so low a view of slash shippers.

[identity profile] empresstria.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, Alexander replied now...*laughs hysterically* He seems to think he can win us back by getting rid of the fanworks board.

[identity profile] hanelissar.livejournal.com 2009-09-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I must admit that hysterical laughter was pretty much my reaction as well.

Too little too late mon ami, we've all flown your nest for the cosy world of Marmalade Fish!

(Actually I think I'd have left anyway - it was distressing me to unreasonable levels that he got the title of the flipping book wrong in the forum's name. Apostrophes may be small things but they are big in importance!)

Ugh. If that's the "official fan site" for Sarah and she has already spoken to him.. Well, I guess a boycott is on.
