In an attempt to be helpful, he told me that if the name sweeps picked me up, I would have the chance to change my name, not immediately be suspended!

This really says to me, "So, we're really sorry but we can't do anything about it! Give it a go, and if you get caught well, haha, it's all just a funny joke isn't it? Then you can use your real name and we can all be friends and everything will be fine!"

Which really says to me that they don't get it. It will never be real for them, that there are people to whom this isn't just a triffling thing they do in their spare time, for fun, that there are people whose lives and livelihoods are impacted by it.
