There was an entertaining discussion in Yuletide IRC about why it worked for me on first read when I didn't quite realize that his dead husband was John, apropos of fics that one can recommend to non-fic-readers. (One of the people there has a new relationship and there was a call for recs. Someone mentioned Freedom & then said sadly that it might not be the same for someone new to all this.)

Heee. Yeah, I love watching everyone analyze it. I personally think it works best if you know the canon and if you know the fandom at least a little (several bits of the story were deliberately written in dialog with the fandom of the time), but I've had enough people tell me that it works without that I can't dispute it all that much. (Apparently it was making the circles of military spouses for a while.)
