Thanksgiving: Excursions and Alarums edition
I'm home. O goodness what a day.
First, the good:
jd and
ryan were doing dinner; I brought cider and some dessert makings. I tried some scary thing on the Wii involving Wario and very short micro-games. After determining my feelings on the matter (about like I'd thought) I retreated to my computer.
The internet was enjoying some turkey-fisting (particularly in
jenphalian's vicinity), lots of pies, lots of togetherness (sometimes too much), and it was very pleasant to be in person with some of my dearest people, online with more, cozily warm, with various cooking hilarity taking place. There was a roast, cranberry bread, rolls,
jld arrived, at length, and there was assorted partying, and then dinner. The roast was tasty. We watched Xanadu, which ... may not have aged well in its 31 years in some respects. The neon-edged effects on the Muses looked like they took a hell of a lot of work to make, and "partner" has a hell of a lot of different connotations in LA in 1980 than in SF in 2011.
Midway through that part of the party, Ryan left to go attempt some Black Friday. The party continued with great glee. Jed was introduced to the hilariously wrong glory that is My Drunk Kitchen. Trivial Pursuit ensued. Now, while all of the parts of this used version were intact, the deck was from 1980. Thus some of the statistics and current events referenced were really not so current. Hilarity ensued. One question that was on a card that was drawn for Jed, although a different color: "What creature makes its home in an apiary?" After a while Jed commenced answering questions that he knew he had no idea of with "Batman". This was, of course, hysterically funny.
I put together the planned dessert slightly shy of midnight and then headed out to my car to go pick up
cleverthylacine for our planned Black Friday shenanigans.
Vash didn't start. He whined in a generally miserable sort of way, but the engine failed to catch. Subsequent tries had the whining shorter and shorter before stopping. I panicked. I texted Tif to inform her of the situation, texted JD miserably, and freaked out. Sadly, Vash's boot did not contain the jumper cables that I thought it did, and the car JD flagged down didn't have any.
A generally cold and miserable experience ensued, followed by JD noticing that I was starting to shiver and hauling me back inside, where we continued calling around for tow services that were actually awake and answering their phones, and not likely to charge both an arm and a leg. We put the neglected dessert in the oven in the meantime, and it came out OK despite me forgetting a few things like, oh, greasing the pan. Also nuts would have been good. I'd planned for nuts. I just forgot to put them in.
Eventually a tow dude did show up. I was introduced to a particular phrasing that made my inner collector of English that's slunk down dark alleyways and come back with some suspicious new syntax perk up: "Is this the car that I need to jump on?"
Thorough documentation later, perhaps in case I had snagged Vash's keys from an unwitting "friend", the guy jumped him, and voila, he started right up. Ryan had arrived by this time, bearing doughnuts that my blood sugar declined although my tongue wanted to say yes.
The guy cautioned me to keep him running for a half-hour at the minimum, so he'd have the chance to get his battery charged back up. I am gathering that perhaps going on infrequent and short trips in cold weather may not have been the best idea from an electrical standpoint, as the drive time looks like it was insufficient to have charged his battery back up. Though perhaps a new battery is in order as well. I drove home. That took less than ten minutes in the general lack of traffic.
While my building's garage does have vents and an open door, I was reluctant to sit in him idling in there. I drove very politely past two cop cars and located the parking lot of the local auto parts store, which is within cranky walking distance of home. I sat there idling (lights off, in park, parking brake on) for the appointed time.
Tif did text back and reassure me that they had found her crash space. This was good. He can get a decent ways on a quarter-tank, but I'm not comfortable stretching that all the way across the Bay in unfamiliar territory when it was uncertain whether he'd boot back up once turned off.
Then I drove home. I turned him off, then tried turning him on again. The engine caught with no hesitation. Good. Thank fuck.
I'm still not going anywhere unnecessary tomorrow, which sadly includes
emceeaich and
cynthia1960's thing. Alas.

Wario Ware! I quite like it, but it still makes me anxious. When there's a large group of people trying to entertain themselves with the Wii, I find it much less annoying than Mario Party (which drags on like Monopoly.)
I particularly like the dart game on that.

I suspect I could pick up the skills with enough practice, but it seems like just the sort of exercise that would be designed to make me miserable, and the general point of those games is to have fun.
Mario Party does seem to go on. The guys were playing that before dinner.
TTLY UNRELATED TO ENTRY
I mostly shipped Nick/Alan. OBVS KRIM IS OBVS.
Anyway I was reading a fic / looking at a fanart and saw it was in a comm called marmalade_fish and was like "OH YES RIGHT FISH, THAT IS AZZ'S THING RIGHT???" and then remembered that we did talk about it and thought I should tell you I read it. ;)

I'm glad Vash's battery is okay. I followed Twitter with some concern!
