Road Trip: The Return

Since Guide Dog Aunt and I knew what was going in the car, what we'd need, and we'd managed to reduce the gear somewhat (having eaten a lot of carrots and left many cucumbers behind), we packed much more compactly and without a lot of angst. We ferried things out, and stacked stuff up. Soon it was time to go, and Mama hadn't made an appearance yet. That was all right -- we'd had our hugs last night.

We were on the road with some alacrity, and my GPS knew the way better than the car's one, which has not been updated in about a decade, and doesn't know a lot of small roads.

We had picked out the books we wanted on Sunday, and that's when my aunt had loaded the discs into the cartridge. They were all ready for us, and we got the story started.

We were headed through San Diego at a snail's pace when Guide Dog Aunt started to look very concerned. Her ear wasn't equalizing pressure like it should, due to blocked tubes, and she was concerned she was about to get a ruptured eardrum (again). She was applying a cold carrot from the icebox to the side of her neck to try to make things be OK. I looked up the location and she moved the carrot, and that helped.

At our first rest stop, we got to wash our hands and faces in water that wasn't unbelievably rusty. It was such a luxury that I didn't care about the dead cockroach, and my aunt forgot to put in eye drops, so we got off at the next exit and found a parking space so she could do that.

We hit LA by noonish, and we stopped in Santa Clarita and switched drivers. I got the mountains again (my favorite!) as Mrs. Pollifax contended with disguises and fake IDs. We stopped again in the depths of Central Not Anywhere Much In Particular with its vast skyscapes, and pushed on to Hollister.

I have a vague childhood(?) memory of a vast dark building with huge bins of chocolate-covered things and candies. I am now convinced that this may well have been Casa de Fruta, since that's what met me when I wandered in there.

We switched again, and Guide Dog Aunt took us the rest of the way home. We got me unloaded, then she zipped off in time to get to her dance class.

I was about 25% in favor of seeking Human Companionship for dinner, but this was strongly overridden by the need to just kind of hole up quietly, without driving anywhere, and Purple was likewise not super up for human anything. It was good to be back in chat range, though!

Casa de Fruta! I've never been, but my California relatives have been sending us salt water taffy from there for years.
