Encircling Meme!

After a long hiatus, one of my friends has returned to Dreamwidth, and I thought: what better an opportunity to throw an encirclement meme?

I think my circle are nifty people who might possibly get along with each other. Feel free to introduce yourselves in the comments, and get to know other potentially like-minded people!

My crowd includes a lot of people who are tech-ish, who are writer-y, and who love a bad good pun.

*waves at folks* Hello, I'm niqaeli, which often gets shortened to niq. Properly, you do not capitalise either. It is a quirky legacy of this name originating on LJ.

DW: [personal profile] niqaeli, demonstrably
Twitter: [twitter.com profile] niqaeli

Those are preeeeetty much the only two sites I'm on regularly. I have other accounts I do use, such as Instagram, but they under the same username and are cross-posted to the others. (Tumblr, I was active on, but I am not now and am not likely to be for a good while.)

I am computer geekish of a very high level power user sort. I am very capable at QA bug identification and documentation, and I could be a programmer if I'd ever pursued, but I don't enjoy programming and usually there are others who are even better at QAishness, so I mostly leave it to those who do it best.

I enjoy much media, and mediafannishness, but also I am completing my @*&#^$*&#W^$&*@# degree so I don't have as much brain for it as I used to. I like seeing other people's stuff, though.

I am friendly, don't bite, and post a lot of cat pics. <3

[personal profile] vass 2016-07-20 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, I'm vass. I'm fannish, tech-ish, writer-y, and love a bad pun (good puns do not exist). Pronouns are they/them/their.

Other sites: [livejournal.com profile] vassilissa (crossposted from here), [twitter.com profile] vassl (for when I'm falling asleep or waiting for something), [tumblr.com profile] vassraptor (high volume and nonsensical.)

On Dreamwidth lately I've been posting about what I'm reading/watching/playing/cooking/etc, shark by shark liveblogs of tech frustration, and how cute my cats are.

My active fandoms currently are Imperial Radch and Dragon Age.

My most recent writing is Imperial Radch fanfic, and I'm a bit stalled on original fiction and poetry. I keep telling myself I will start writing interactive fiction, because that looks super fun.

In tech I'm an enthusiastic unskilled or semi-skilled amateur, and my interests are in general areas of open source, Unix, command lines, hardware occasionally, privacy, and being an enormous control freak who wants a lot of access to their own machines and is willing to face a lot of frustration and learning curve to get that access.

[personal profile] wohali 2016-07-20 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
*waving* Hi everyone, I'm wohali, a tech-y gaming motorcyclist and electronic music type. Pronouns are she/her.

I'm also the aforementioned returned-to-Dreamwidth person. (I actually used to be an LJ person and came here after they imploded, but never actively used my DW account. It still feels like a homecoming to me to be back here.)

Other sites: wohali (Twitter), where I try to post a daily cute picture, and An Atypical Life (my professional blog). I intend to crosspost anything new on my website to here, but not vice versa. You lucky people :P

I'm learning to live with a chronic illness, one that seemed untreatable until a few months ago. As of late, improvement in treatment means I am starting to return to some semblance of daily normality, so that's a huge relief.

I'm currently working through as many volumes of "The Year's Best Science Fiction" as I can lay my hands on, as well as finishing up the entire radio archives of NPR's This American Life. I'm also helping finish up our release of (open source database software) Apache CouchDB 2.0, at the moment focused on the port to Windows (which is surprisingly popular!)

Finally, this weekend I take a 6-hour motorcycle ride to Ohio to hang out with some gaming friends of mine, and take another 6-hour ride home on Monday. I'm looking forward to it, except for the out-in-33C-heat-in-full-body-leathers part, and will definitely journal the experience here.

Good excuse, yes!

For personal stuff, I am Jenett (here, LJ), or JenettSilver (Twitter, not that I tweet much). Pronouns are she/her. Also various blogs (religious and professional) that get cross-posted to DW and LJ.

Me:
Librarian (current in a special library, being more identifying gets *very* identifying so I don't do it in public, but I love my work and talk about it a lot in locked entries.) Particularly interested in accessibility and disability history, these days.

Priestess in a small initiatory religious witchcraft tradition, and if I'm not talking about being a librarian, I'm probably talking about that. I like geeking my religious practice, and various discussions online also periodically produce what my friends call "Librarian smash" posts in which I take on bad Pagan research. (As you might guess from this, I enjoy geeking out about religion in general, and whatever religion other people are or aren't is likely fine by me as long as they're fine with me doing mine.)

I don't talk much about what I'm reading (I have this thing about knowing what I'm reading telling you an awful lot about the inside of my head) but I will talk a lot about books in general if nudged.

I am moderately fannish, in the sense of lightly following a number of fannish discussions, enjoying watching some things, reading some other things, and participating in Yuletide, but there tends not to be much fannish content in my journal (especially now that Alternity is over.)

Multiple chronic health things are annoying, but mostly sort of manageable, for values, and I'm glad to talk about them if helpful to other people.

Hi... I'm one of the more lurk-y ones.
Legal name's Simon, but I don't use that much and try to use the same user-name whatever platform I'm online on.

Other particulars: British, snarky [although the one is implicit in the other] and I duel-weild weapons-grade puns. Techy, worked the hell-desk for the NHS for far too long, fan-ish although leaning towards trad media hard sci-fi rather than gamer.

I'm an aspiring writer, yet-to-be author although I self-publish serialisations in my journal and Ao3. I don't write fan-fic usually. I've also recently got into hobby blacksmithing, as hitting things with a big hammer is very therapeutic. I built myself a forge and workshop out of recycled and upcycled stuff, because I'm broke most of the time.

Hi, I'm Debbie. Really, I'm only on DW and LJ, both under the same handle. Preferred pronouns she/her.

I'm editor-y more than writery. I've been an editor at Tor Books, and an organizer at WisCon. Currently, I'm a contracts manager for Wiley publishing, looking at retirement in the not too distant future. I'm the chair of the motherboard for the Tiptree Award.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I engage in some economic equality activism with Strike Debt Bay Area.

I blog about body image and related issues with [personal profile] laurieopal at Body Impolitic.

And I'm currently reviving a copy-editing career, so if you need copy-editing or know someone who does, let me know. My email address is on my user page.

Here, I mostly post reviews of what I'm reading, with occasional other posts, and I like reading and commenting on other people's journals.

I'm sraun - Scott.

Old-school fannish, got involved in SF Fandom in 1978. Fan-run conventions, books. Not much into tv / movies / comics / anime / etc.

Computer geek - not into hardware much any more, never go into programming. Day job has been tech support for the last 20+ years - started out doing internal corporate tech support, now I'm supporting large NAS devices.

Married with a wonderful wife and her three crazy kids, and their families. My life is mostly boring, we're letting them have the excitement.
sithjawa: Black and white drawing of a wolf’s head in profile (Default)

[personal profile] sithjawa 2016-07-20 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sithjawa, AKA Steph. Oakandsage on Twitter (overdue a handle change, but too lazy). Programmer, medical software. Hobbies are gaming, gardening (mostly fruit orchard, these days). Sometimes cooking, though that's more that I *have* to feed myself, so I'm damn well gonna try to make it fun.

I live on a small 1 acre ranch, where I share a tiny cottage with a dog and a cat. The ranch is also home to an ever-changing menagerie of dogs, ungulates, and feral cats. And a couple other humans too I guess.

I do NaNoWriMo, but I don't really have any serious writerly ambitions. Well, I have dreams of someday turning out to be actually pretty OK at writing, but that's a secret. Don't tell anybody and especially not my inner editor.

Fandom-adjacent, don't really produce content. Dragon Age, Tolkien, Elder Scrolls. I like gaming fandoms because they expand on the realness of the gameworld.

Sometimes I am involved in roleplaying campaigns.

I'm Not An Activist, but if I were, my causes would be neurodiversity, asexuality, and genderqueer rights. At least, if I get on a rant, 2/3 of the time it's about one or more of those topics.

I very rarely post to DW b/c I don't know anyone here whom I don't interact with more frequently on other forums, and more than half the time when I do post it's because I had to put the rant somewhere, so my journal kinda sucks :P Sorry 'bout that~

Oh. Also, xenopsych/xenoethics.

Hello! I'm Nanila, here and lots of other places (most notably, LJ, Twitter and Flickr).

Quick-fire facts: I'm a dual national. I'm mixed race. I have two children and a much-loved cat, all of whom I photograph a lot. I live in England.

I'm a scientist and an engineer, so I guess I'm pretty tech-ish. My day job involves controlling stuff in space, and curation of payload instrument data. I don't get very specific about this in unlocked posts on my journal, apart from when it relates to a public outreach event I've done (see this recent entry about the Royal Society.

I'm not very fannish. Occasionally I get really into something, like Neko Atsume or Pacific Rim, but I very rarely produce fannish work. I happily read/consume other people's, if it's about source material that I'm familiar with, and leave kudos/make encouraging and appreciative noises.

I'm excited to meet new people here!

Hi, I'm ghoti (fish). I'm also on twitter as [twitter.com profile] marafish. She/her pronouns, but I'm not picky.

I don't post much, but I'm trying to get better about that. I'm also trying to get better about commenting, as I have been a lurker for most of my internet life.

I'm a biologist for county government in upstate/western NY. I grew up in NYC which definitely skews my views of many things.

Generally nerdy but not about any one thing in particular. I know a little bit about a lot of things. I'm also aces at trivia. In fact, I'm waiting to hear if I'll be called for Jeopardy this year.

I am quite fond of puns and other popsicle stick / candy wrapper type jokes.

Anything else, just ask :)

Howdy, I'm Jesse the K in real life as well. I've been so lucky to have had jobs where my queer, fannish self is acceptable, so I never developed a psued. So I'm [twitter.com profile] jesse_the_k as well as [tumblr.com profile] jesse_the_k. But here is my home.

Disabled, white, Jewish, queer (bi in youth; acquired asexuality thanks to medicine "side effects"), she/her, happy dog mom, over sixty.

I try to write "what's making me grateful right now" posts as often as I can.

I also post less personal content weekly. I'm all about in-depth recs; I always provide a sample to show why I like it.

I write about assistive technology: I've both used it (power wheelchair) and worked at a company that made & sold it (software optimized for blind/low vision users). Disability rights is another passion: I helped steer WisCon towards a commitment to universal design and accommodation. Previously I've worked for better access to public transportation as well as improvements in pedestrian facilities for everyone.

I've loved letter design all my life, and worked as a typesetter and calligrapher. I was turned on to graphic works (novel, memoirs, journalism) by Spiegelman's Maus and now I read at least three/month.

I've got nine years of posts to browse, and I adore comments from current readers, no matter how old the post. I'm open to short comments too: knowing that other people read me—even just to disagree—gives me bliss.

I read lots of fanfic: previously Due South & Stargate Atlantis; now Sherlock, ACD, and all the fine flowerings of Sherlock Holmes.

I'm kinda wordy. No subscription needed, just take a peak at my tags and browse a bit to see if something catches your fancy.

[personal profile] silveradept 2016-07-22 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hi. I'm [personal profile] silveradept, and these things are always frightening, mildly or majorly, because I always feel like I don't have a defining characteristic or positive element to use as my hook.

I'm in the library world, and I get to wear ladybugs on my head, dragon tails, and pajamas when I do Story Time. I'm also the person that gets thrown at anyone with a technology question that isn't covered by the standard scripts, because I can do research and I've done enough breaking of things to get am idea of how someone else's things broke. I think the open source world could use public libraries as great allies.

I decided this year to start actually participating in the fanfiction world and expressing some fannish identities. I'm mostly just doing exchanges rather than writing things for my own self, to get a feel as to whether I can write for others, and because I like getting gifts in return.

My journal is mostly regurgitating other people's articles and links, maybe with a new sheen of context. Occasionally I embark on projects and thinky-thoughts, but I tend to keep things guarded in my own journal. I will probably live more in your comment sections than in posting to my own journal.

I want to believe that I am supportive and trustworthy and will not be judgmental to most expressions of self and identity. Occasionally, people let me prove that to their own satisfaction.

If I ever get over the brainweasels claiming I'm a failure of adulthood, or sufficiently manage to beat them back to the fringes, I might even believe the nice things you say about me.

Hello! I don't post very much these days, and even less publicly, but I'll drop a comment here anyway.

Things that may be interesting: science background (chemistry and materials), programming, fiber arts (spinning/knitting/weaving), vaguely fannish (Bujold, Steven Universe, Tolkien, movies including Pacific Rim, Mad Max: Fury Road, apparently the new Ghostbusters, other misc), interested in how communities/relationships break (trauma/abuse/entitlement), apparently interestingly gendered, gardening, making things by hand, ritual/myth.

hullo,

prima fascie I am a bog standard programmer/computer science nerd with a functional programming bent, that gets you about 80% of typical interactions. In those, I fear I am very stereotypical... :-/

I am prone to ranting about software development and the state of technology. I live in Seattle, WA, USA, and am a big fan of transit and the New Urbanism.

I'm not into fandom, I rather like Firefly and a variety of sf/fantasy books, but I don't discuss it by and large, outside of particular ideas being conveyed. For more discussionary things, I read history, about 1-2 books a month. Lately, it's been on the fascist period in Germany, then soon it will be on the fascist period in Italy.

I also do oil painting these days, with a dash of watercolors. So Art History and Aesthetics is starting to feature in my mental rumination.

I also eyeball current events etc. That has gotten very depressing lately, and that's all that I want to say about *that*.

Lately, I am pondering interactions of purists/rebels/mainstream and how things get transmuted over time from founders to being normative.

I tend to be irregularly active on IRC and DW in general.

Belatedly! (I'm catching up on my reading page in, of course, backwards order.)

Hullo, I'm Inoru; pronouns are at this time any because gender whatever basically. I'm deaf, and will chat about it and accessibility of the world vis my experiences at the drop of a hat. I love to gush about languages (because they're cool if at times kind of inexplicable), frequently exclaim about whatever media I'm currently devouring, often nsfw just by don't of my default icon if nothing else :D, and am variously fannish, fibercrafty and artsy, and am currently playing a lot of TERA.

My pet causes if I did more than make posts or tweets about them are accessibility and queer rights, and probably others I'm blanking on.

I dont post frequently, largely because brainweasels, but I'm always on twitter. Literally if I am awake I am probably on twitter either tweeting or reading y'all. I don't publicly link my handle there with here even though it is...really obvious, because brains. *shrugs* I will willingly share it in PMs though so if you don't already know it and want to, \o/. (As a warning, I tweet a lot about fic I read. Like, a lot. Ask Azz. Or Steph. xD)

I feel like I'm forgetting something but it is too warm for brains, so.

I will now stop procrastinating doing this...

I'm [personal profile] highlander_ii, H2 for short. I'm kinda that pretty much everywhere.

I am multi-fannish. I don't 'ship (though I do write fic with 'ships in them). I do write fic - long, short, somewhere in between. I put myself into a lot of challenges - deadlines help me finish thins. =)

I post sporadically nowadays. (I used to post a lot more, then I stopped, but I'm trying to get back to posting more things.)

I am currently running a nifty countdown of ALL the episodes of MacGyver from my least favorite to my most favorite. [an idea borrowed from a couple other MacGyver fans and it's ttly fun]

I'm a photographer by hobby. You can find a lot of my photos over here: http://photographybyh2.h2smsk.com

Feel free to comment on my posts or to read without commenting, it's all good.
