Cyclical Names

I collect Daves. (Just at this moment, one of the guys from Student Services, David Handler, just walked through, and waved at me.) I know a hell of a lot of Daves. I really should sit down and list all of them someday.

I used to collect Joshes; I knew that the name David meant trouble. (I'd only known a few of them at this point.) I just knew too many guys named Josh. There were the twins, Josh and Jeremy; there was the cute one, the bad driver, the twit/flirt... those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head now.

Narcissa seems to think that I collect guys of Darkside's name. Really, I don't. There was the one I was in love with my freshman year of high school, there was the one in some of my classes my junior year who my ex had a thing for (Narcissa told me this after the fact), and only now do I see an explosion of them around the school here. Darkside's class group had about four of them, including him and Shrimpy; there's one in some of my classes with the same name as Shrimpy (last name ending with a z rather than an s, but still the same), and then there's the president of the anime club. Nevertheless, since I was so deeply in love with Riccochet the Super-Nerd, and since I'm so head-over-heels in love with Darkside, Narcissa sees me as having a thing for guys with that name.

Ginger sees me as having a thing for guys with one-syllable names. Jay. Ty. Josh. Shawn. I've started upgrading to two-syllable guys since then: BJ, River, Super-Nerd, Bryan, Darkside. Ginger would get a kick out of my Dave collection. Perhaps I should write to her.

Josh is the Jewish male name of our generation, just as Mark was the Jewish male name of our parents' generation. It's also used by a number of Christians (I had a mutual bogglement moment in college with the Catholic Josh who had always thought it was a Christian name. I'd always thought it was a Jewish name). CTY had many Joshes. I'm not surprised you knew a lot. (I've known: Josh I dated, Josh my cousin, Josh my pseudo-cousin, Josh the other at George School, Josh in high school, Josh Cynamon(sp), Josh the one who was mutually boggled, and probably others I've forgotten.)

You do remember that whatever-you're-calling-him-now-Josh-I-dated-in-high-school's middle name is David, right? Hee.

Yes; pyrogenic, our mutual former beloved Josh, is the intersection of the Josh and the David collection.

Amusing. I seem to have two, now, of the former couples who both speak to me but don't contact each other... you and Joshling, and then Votania and Darkside.

Ehh. I'm years over the stage of pointedly not contacting him. I have enough trouble keeping in contact with people that unless I've got a reason to, I'm not going to reopen contacts that have died. Introversion, meet laziness. And I was usually the one driving the communication when we were dating, so *shrug*.

I don't know many ex-couples keeping the friendship, but I've only really got contact at all regularly with one ex-couple. No, scratch that. I know of a number of people who are on distantly friendly terms with their exes. I can only think of one ex-couple (pulling here from the set where I keep contact with both and the set where I keep contact with only one) where the people are still friends with each other.
