In Britain, we don't use the word journal at all. (Excpet thoseof us who have LJs or picked the word up from American TV.) But from what I was told as a pre-teen by Mallory Pike from the Babysitters club books a diary is...
Went to school: English, History, French and Gym. Made daisy chains with Jessi during lunch break. Babysitting job for the Rodowskis. Bed.
And a journal would be...
I hate Gym with the fiery passion of a thousand exploding death stars. Why do they make me go through that hell? I'm going to be a novelist, not an athlete. Jessi's changed her hair; it's way pretty. She's thinking of getting it all cut off, which I'm sure she'd regret later. Jackie Rodowski broke a plate earlier. That kid will be the death of me I swear, but when he looks up at you all cute and apologetic, you can't stay mad. Roll on the weekend.

Interesting.
I'm really not sure what my own definitions are.
