When I think that someone is a terminal prick and I don't want to have anything to do with them, I find that I will make excuses involving my own issues, so as not to offend the other party. It's not them, it's me. Even when it is them.

Sometimes I even believe it.

I think you need to set aside other peoples feelings, your worry of offending anyone and just speak your mind...if they get butthurt, that's their loss, not yours.

I'm learning, slowly and surely. Darkside has been helping me: being disappointed when I don't do as I ought for myself, and cheering me on when I stand up for myself.

Not putting out after the thing with the thing (you know what I mean) was something Darkside delighted at hearing.
