Religious fappage, from comment

One of the givens in many religious forms that I am willing to give credence to is the whole 'the human mind will not wrap around the Highest; to do so would break it or stretch it unimaginably for that moment and there would be no coherent memory and no comprehension' concept.

Therefore, any Foo that may be worshipped by humans is not the true Foo.

Therefore, any Foo that may be worshipped by humans is not the true Foo.

More technically, any Foo that may be understood by humans is not the true Foo. We're very good at worshipping things we don't understand and that yet can still exist. ;)

What he said. I definitely don't understand Isis. Although I'm not necessarily certain that 'worship' is the correct term for what I do...obey, certainly.

Hrm. Worship:

Noun.
1a. The reverent love and devotion accorded a deity, an idol, or a sacred object.
 b. The ceremonies, prayers, or other religious forms by which this love is expressed.
2. Ardent devotion; adoration.

Verb transitive.
1. To honor and love as a deity.
2. To regard with ardent or adoring esteem or devotion.

Verb intransitive.
1. To participate in religious rites of worship.
2. To perform an act of worship.

Since reverence is a required part of worship, the definition of revere:

1. To regard with awe, deference, and devotion.

And yeah, all those things apply to my feelings and actions towards Isis and whoever that God is who hangs around me and doesn't talk much. :)

Now, given that...do I *understand* either of them? Oh, hell no. I have only the barest grasp on their existence. I don't know what they really are, why they're bothering with me, why they don't just *do* any of the things they tell me to do -- I know they're quite capable of them. I'm not capable of comprehending them. *shrug* I just know that as far as I am able to tell, they're on the Right Side. That's good enough for me.

*blinkblinkblink*

This is exactly the argument I was presenting last night in chat... the one that had the poor condecending "have you read the bible?" christian preachers boggled when I added what I feel is the logical extention to it.

So since any Foo worshiped by humans cannot be the true Foo, particular methods of Foo worship are interchangeable.

Completely agreed.

One of my terms for "That Which Is" is "The Unknowable". God/s and/or goddess/s are beyond human comprehension. Thats how we got so many individual "gods" IMO, we broke It up in our heads, into little facets in order to have a better shot at wrapping our minds around it and dealing with It. And even in those little facets we really don't "get it" although it gives us a place to begin.

So while I will pray and make offerings to Guan Yin, I believe that I am addressing a small part of It that I can deal with, one that my mind associates with being able to help me in a particular situation.
