when I fall in love..
Once upon a time, I dreamed of eternal love. You know, the sort when you look into their eyes for the first time, and then you both know that it is inevitable.
A time of courtship and roses follows, you looking carefully at him over the top of your book, then blushing and looking away; and he comes up, examines the title, and gives you a kiss on the hand to remember him with.
You write love poetry back and forth, and giggle with your girlfriends as he does things to try and impress you with his wit, his strength, and his humor. You are duly impressed, and let it show...if you wish.
Eventually you spend some time together, and when the moment is right -- your first kiss.
The kiss is romantic, and nearly makes you faint and/or lose consciousness. You are incredibly high, and go about for the next several days giggling for no reason whatsoever.
You then get married, and live happily ever after, raising a family and dying at the same moment, forever as in love as you were the day you first met and the moment you first kissed.
Nice dream, eh?

You meet a guy, he's shy, awkward, his hands homeless except on the steering wheel. You look into his eyes and see that he is not here by default, that he made the choice standing on a bridge over a waterfall.
He buys you food and loans you his beloved car on the first week he knows you, with ice on all the roads.
When he kisses you for the first time, you stand astounded at the gentle brush of lips, confused and worried for his safety. You notice that somehow his safety has become as important as your own.
You fight through thickets of your mutual fears. You struggle with your own demons and each others. You get married. You get handfasted. You work out contracts on how to raise your children. You do a lot of letting go of your preconceptions. You learn about privacy, about the walls and locks that come with love that will last forever. You learn that they are no bad thing.
You struggle to have kids, you struggle to raise them. Eventually, your kids thank you. Maybe one of you dies first, but the other has the strength left to keep going, keep enjoying life up until the last possible moment.
You do not meet in some celestial fields, because you heaven was in the work and the struggle of loving someone their whole lives.
Funny, how my definition of romance has changed.
He impresses you by stripping naked, shedding all his soul clothes and standing before you as a scared little boy, not big or powerful or smart. Just in love with you.

....Every relationship I've had that even approaches that yet, save for Darkside and Adam, but the dynamics with them are different, has had an undercurrent of fear of the Other (not for, but of) and hate.
Not a good combination.
