Four Hugo awards, and counting. That's as many as Heinlein got, and she's still alive and writing.

Start the series with Shards of Honor or Cordelia's Honor if you're female; start it with The Warrior's Apprentice if you're male.
Anything she has written, I will buy, whether I've heard good things about it or not. This, on a college student's budget.

Lem is a Polish SF writer, author of The Futurological Congress, Solaris, Tales of Pirx the Pilot and many others. He has a couple of different styles that he writes in. One is a very surreal, comic side. The other is very philosophical. I like them both.
