You should certainly ask. One thing to consider is that he's trying not to hurt you, and going about it in all the wrong ways. I've had a similar problem with people not telling me when I was acting up / coming across wrong; they'd avoid telling me "because they respected me", and I'd take it as a sign of disrespect.
