Where You Smile, and Then You Nod.

I tried my hand at making sushi tonight. I looked up a recipe for the proportions of stuff, then while everyone else was out of the kitchen, I began humming happily to myself and putting sushi together. I stopped when I ran out of rice.

Then, I called [livejournal.com profile] votania into the kitchen in the break between episodes of Invader Zim.

"So, you think we have enough sushi?" I asked, pointing her towards the refrigerator, where the sushi was chilling, waiting upon being cut.

She looked. She smiled. She nodded.

I think we have at least seven logs in there. At least. I think we'll be cutting those into seven or eight pieces each...

That's a lot of sushi, if you're considering that there are two people in the household who eat it.

Well, three, if you count [livejournal.com profile] eris_raven.

Mmmmmm...sushi.

What kinds did you make?

Like an Alaska Roll. Very cool. :)

Yeah, usually Salmon, Cucumber, and Cream Cheese. The local place near me makes them. They're not too bad, if you like salmon

Raw Salmon is not that great actually. It's got this kind of slimy texture to it, and is surprisingly bland. It's really good with spicy mayonnaise (mayo + togarashi) sauce in a Spicy Salmon roll, or with Avacado, but the Nigiri form is not very appetizing. Usually, I stick to Tuna, Crab, and Octopus, since they are generally cheaper and have a better flavor to them.

Probably the best use of salmon that I saw was at a local place in a dish they called a Volcano Roll. It was essentially a Salmon, Avacado, and Spicy Mayo roll with another roll wrapped around it, in the shape of a beaker. At the top they put down a layer of Tuna with a haping amount of that spicy mayo. It was to die for ;)

You'll just have to invite [livejournal.com profile] minakochan over. :)

Mmmmmm, sushi. *mouth waters*

mmmmm yum, sushi. Making rolls is fun. :) Nigiri is a little more of a pain, but good too. We usually just do sashimi though. Mmmmm.

??? you're the one who was making sushi yesterday!!!

[identity profile] retch.livejournal.com 2003-05-04 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ewwwwww!

[identity profile] popefelix.livejournal.com 2003-05-04 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sushi, as [livejournal.com profile] tesselene has told me, is simply the marriage of white rice and rice wine vinegar. Sashimi is not necessarily involved.

[identity profile] popefelix.livejournal.com 2003-05-05 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Sadly, [livejournal.com profile] hlynna doesn't like vinegar in any form.

[identity profile] retch.livejournal.com 2003-05-04 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
sure, but her posts had mentioned salmon. She hadn't said she'd cooked it!

Cooked salmon is fairly yummy (though I prefer raw or smoked (mmmm on Irish brown bread with capers and a spritz of lemon!)), just not as sushi! :)

I love raw fish, though I'm pretty pedestrian in my favorite fishies: toro (fatty tuna belly, so good), maguro (tuna), hamachi (yellow tail), and sake (fresh salmon). mmmmm.

Wednesday looks like Korean BBQ for lunch, but tomorrow is wide open. I sense the possiblity of impending sushi.

Mmmm, and indeed, I ended up at Masa's having sushi for lunch. Yum. :)

It is totally worth trying. Though maybe a little closer to water... :)
