Well, for text messaging it's more justified.

Not every phone has predictive input, which makes it very difficult to actually write things out in full. On top of that there's a limit to how much you can send in a single message - just a couple of hundred characters.

I don't think that the whole 'mobile culture' thing caught on as much in the US as it has in Europe...
