the amusing discussion
People have different ideas of nettiquite. I tend to use my IM programs only to talk with people I personally know, either IRL or through some other forum, such as bulletin boards or Livejournal or e-mail. I tend to not talk to random online people through anything other than ICQ. Perhaps this is the reason why....

I was asleep...
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
ASLEEP?
Azure Lunatic says:
yeah.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
WTF were you doing on msn!?
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
why was your computer on?
Azure Lunatic says:
DSL.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
i mean, WHAT THE F*CK?
Azure Lunatic says:
my roommate uses my computer at all hours too.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
and..?
Azure Lunatic says:
...and MSN...
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
that still doesn't explain why you were using MSN
Azure Lunatic says:
...there's somebody I keep touch with on MSN.
Azure Lunatic says:
He never e-mails me, but whenever he sees me online he sends message.
Azure Lunatic says:
Therefore, I keep MSN on.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
you were asleep though.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
that's rude, you know.
Azure Lunatic says:
...when it's him I tend to wake up.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
somebody would never know if you were there or not.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
i thought you were ignoring me
Azure Lunatic says:
...no, sorry.
Azure Lunatic says:
My computer tends to be online at any hour of the day or night.
Azure Lunatic says:
hmm.... isn't MSN the one that you can set to show you as away if you haven't been doing anything with it for a while....?
Azure Lunatic says:
hmm...
Azure Lunatic says:
yes it is.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
i REALISE about DSL
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
but that doesn't explain MSN
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
DSL doesn't mean MSN is always on also
Azure Lunatic says:
Dave *never* e-mails.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
*people* get *offended
Azure Lunatic says:
I apologize if I offended you by falling asleep in front of my computer because I haven't gotten more than six hours of sleep a night for the past two weeks.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
well don't keep MSN on, jeez
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
apology accepted, though
Azure Lunatic says:
Leaving MSN on is the way I do things. I rarely am sitting in one place, even at the computer, for more than five minutes.
Azure Lunatic says:
I rarely plan when exactly I'm going to hop up from the computer and go off and do something else.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
So you leave MSN on, KNOWING you can offend people?
Azure Lunatic says:
sometimes it takes a few minutes, sometimes I end up leaving the computer to its own devices for a few hours.
Azure Lunatic says:
I primarily use MSN for talking with the people I know from home and at school, all of whom know my computer habits.
Azure Lunatic says:
This is the way I interact with them. They know the hyperactive and short-attention spanned way I deal with my computer.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
I primarily use MSN for talking with the people I know from home and at school, all of whom know my computer habits.
oh? i doubt that *everybody* on your list is that way. Me, for example.
Azure Lunatic says:
I said "Primarily."
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
yea
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
exactly
Azure Lunatic says:
I use MSN to stay in touch with people I have been good friends with for years. This is my priority.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
point proven, then
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
though i still don't see why you would leave MSN on
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
with erratic behaviour like yours, nobody would *ever* know when you're online.
Azure Lunatic says:
no, not really.
Azure Lunatic says:
But I do write back.
Azure Lunatic says:
I don't know why my friends don't just send e-mail.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
i don't know why anybody would bother messaging you.
Azure Lunatic says:
Perhaps because they're my friends?
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
unless of course they *knew* that you were online
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
at least change your status to away
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
it doesn't change by itself, you know.
Azure Lunatic says:
I'd thought that I had the dratted thing set up so it would change status after so many minutes.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
it doesn't
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
why don't you just change it by yourself?
Azure Lunatic says:
it can do that. or at least the settings say it ought to be able to.
Azure Lunatic says:
walking to the kitchen to get water is not "away."
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
well it doesn't
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
i never said it was, damnit!
Azure Lunatic says:
Walking to the kitchen to get water and then having to clean up the mess the cat made of the kitchen floor, on the other hand, is "away."
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says: Azure Lunatic says: walking to the kitchen to get water is not "away."
PLEASE show me where i said it was.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
i said you should change the status yourself.
Azure Lunatic says:
...the point I was trying to make being that my "away" or not status is subject to change regularly without me being in a position to change my status.
Azure Lunatic says:
Such as thinking I was going to be getting a glass of water and ending up taking care of whatever the cat did.
Azure Lunatic says:
or thinking I was checking my e-mail and ending up falling asleep.
Azure Lunatic says:
or thinking that I had the program set to set me to "away" automatically after a certain number of minutes, only to find that either the new version of the program or my roommate messed with my settings.
"Nothin' lasts forever, and we both know hearts can change.." says:
that can and does happen with 90% of everybody who uses MSN, you know.
Azure Lunatic says:
As I may have mentioned, a good 90% of my friends list know my attention span in intimate detail.
Azure Lunatic says:
This conversation has very little usefulness to me, in fact negative usefulness, as it's too bloody late by my biological clock's standards, and I happen to be easily irritable at this hour of the morning.
Azure Lunatic says:

I am sort of like you though, I leave ICQ open all the time, though usually on invis. Once the contact list grew over 200 people it was getting to be too many people to talk to. I should thin it out once I get back home....purge out anyone I've not talked to for more than 6 months or so.

And I've known for *weeks* what your computer habits were like, Az. You should change that list from a few posts back. I figured out that you had DSL and never turned MSN off a looong time ago. :) If I wanna say something to you, I say something. If you don't answer, I know you're not there. //shrug// No big deal.

...from now on, I think my MSN friends list is going to have two less names on it ... leaving one person, Maya the Papaya, who does not have it figured out about my computer habits, mostly because she's never online...
I would have responded with much more rudeness, but I was tired enough that I was making extra caution to be polite.
