I thought flu shots were only recommended for some people (the elderly, people prone to flu, etc.) because they caused the symptoms of a single, mildish case of flu. Has this now changed?

Depends on the season. I believe this most likely originated in a group of people prone to flu. I passed it on for the humor value. Note that I'd never use caps so.
