Alia's shields can't withstand death, to keep anyone out yet, but they can withstand memories. It's like a paper wall between a very powerful electromagnet and other stuff. When there's no metal within range of the electromagnet, when you gently lob stuff at it, it may bounce off the paper wall. But when there's a piece of metal that comes in range, it gets sucked through the paper, tearing it, allowing other stuff to come through as well.
