Computer errors out the wazoo.

So I try and share what model DSL modem I've got with simoncion over AIM. This trips off a comedy of errors -- the modem unplugs itself, causing an error, which cascades into a memory dump, which forces a restart, which forces a reconnect to the 'net, which takes about eight minutes now.

So I'm IMing simoncion with an explanation of all this happy shit, and of course without me even touching the modem, it unsafely unplugs itself (again) and then happily reconnects. I make angry noises, ...ah, and it looks like my whole USB hub is out. Just peachy.

can you afford to buy a cheap-ass Pentium (or clone) system? It sounds like you would be well-served with a separate router, provided there exist Linux/xBSD drivers for your DSL modem.

There do not exist. My girlfriend and I already checked. This is why there is not Neo set up with modem as of a year or more ago.

Neo is a recycled small Compaq, and would be ideal for the job, had we an OS that liked both the modem and the computer.

Also, correct me if I'm WAY off base:

Does your DSL modem have an ethernet jack built in?
If you get another ethernet adaptor for your machine, you shouldn't need to find any drivers for your modem.

Make and model: Intel Pro/DSL 3200.

It has not got an ethernet jack built in. It is a dinky piece of shit that has got one (1) status light on the front, which is alternately red, amber, or green, depending on what is going on inside, and either blinks or does not blink, also depending. It has got a phone jack (RJ-11) on the back, as well as a USB port to connect to the computer (windows only, please, it says in TFM).

Have you verified that your modem conforms to the "Universal Serial Bus Communication Device Class /USB CDC ACM" standard? (You'll find information in the kernel docs: Documentation/usb/acm.txt

If you haven't could you do this, when you have time:

Plug your DSL modem into your Linux box. "cat" (or edit) '/proc/bus/usb/devices'

Please do post the output.

Too busy, plus there was the hope of installing Win98 on the machine (because that OS talks to the DSL modem easily, rather than me having to hack things that I'm not used to hacking), but that hope was dashed when it was revealed that "the bitch" (former friend of the household) had made our Win98 CDs disappear.
