That switch is dead.

I mean, it's already dead, but it's deader. Like, seriously. It's been the cause of the half of the network woes that the old skank-modem was not the cause of.

This has been driving me to near tears for the past week. And it's the bloody switch. The bloody, stupid, useless, smegging switch.

I am going to hit it so hard that it's going to take God Almighty and all the king's horses and all the king's men, and they still won't be able to put that switch back together again, that's how dead it is. It is more dead than a roadkilled skunk on a bad, hot, scorching day. It is more dead than Dr. King (Junior). It is more dead than the brain of G. W. Bush, and that's saying something. It might be on par with the deadness level of John's father-in-law, only on a more immediate timeframe. Only I think I'm going to use a hammer, instead. Not the bonky flashlight, because I am probably going to be hitting it hard enough to bust lightbulbs, and the bonky flashlight doesn't deserve that kind of punishment. (Hmm, maybe if I used John's father-in-law to hit it...?)

Allow me to back up for a second and give you a brief layout of the network, past and present.

For the entertainment of all, I have done these up in graphical format, to celebrate the happiness of the network and the harmonious swapping of packets.

Old:

Here, Sorcha and Acknar have poor connectivity to the 'net, and Tigereye has poor connectivity to Sorcha and Acknar.

Interim:

Tigereye and Acknar have shitty connectivity to the 'net.

New:

Happy! Happy! Spiffin'! Sweet! Harmonious! Felicitous! Joy!

So, you see, it was the switch at the centre of all the troubles.

Now, I shall go move myself some bookshelfage to get at the plug and plug the new one in all right and tight, and then I shall go with the camera and get me a "before" picture.

I don't know if there will be enough left for an "after" picture.

Always fun trying to troubleshoot multiple network problems at once...nobody ever thinks about the hub/switch, its supposed to sit in the corner and just work.

Curious though...why the hub and switch? Are there more computers at Acknar's location you aren't showing? Or is it just a lack of ports or something?

Missing from the diagram would be the rooms and distances involved. It's a 12-foot cable from Tigereye to switch D, and the hub by Acknar is in the other room, and the cords do funky and convoluted things to avoid being slammed in doors.

There were also at other points some other computers involved, which is why so many places to plug other things in -- Neo was originally plugged into switch D in my room, and there were plans to put two computers in the other bedroom instead of just Acknar.

Ahah...organic network design "We didn't plan it, it just grew that way".

sorta like the network thats growing on/around my desk. I have several network jacks on the wallbox next to me feeding into the house network(which runs though the crawlspace and into the patch panel), but with 2 PCs, a laptop(well two actually, but the work one is hooked up twice a month for 10 minutes to enter payroll time and then stowed) and the DSL modem and router there I'm out of space. I had to put the WAP in my room in the corner, because it was the only place that had a free network port and a flat space to set it.

After there's budget and security training (mine) for it, we are so going wireless. I am happy in that my roommate is conscious of the security issues of 802.11 and is not pushing for me to put up anything that I am not trained to defend from random crackers-by.

I got the WAP for my roomate for Xmas.....I think its been used a half dozen times now? We just have too much Cat5 in too small a space, and don't really need wireless anywhere in the house. Maybe with summer here we will get more usage out of it.
