The Lure of Books

Instead of being a Bad Little Fayoumis and reading fanfic, I was a Good Little Fayoumis and instead read Pterry's Monstrous Regiment. I shall now adopt "thinking with one's socks" as a good description of some of [livejournal.com profile] garnetdagger's more impulsive and dangerous moments.

Compares favorably to Mulan and the Honor Harrington books.

Hmm - does Pterry constitute a lure in and of himself?

He's going to be in Minneapolis next Easter...

If you keep an eye on http://www.mnstf.org/minicon/, when the Minicon 40 page goes up you can register. IIRC, the first pre-reg deadline is approximately Halloween. But I don't swear to that - I pre-registered at Minicon 39, so I haven't been paying close attention.

(I'm a touch upset - I thought at least the registration form was up by now!)

I have to visit my fiance here in Saint Paul next Easter, then...I need to see Pterry so bad...I loved Monstrous Regiment. Thinking with one's socks is great, I have to reread that book.

Definitely. I would feel good about letting kids read them too. There's so many levels you can enjoy Pratchett's work on.

The Regiment left me somewhat dissatisfied. It was competent and thoroughly readable, and it had a good storyline. A number of scenes felt gratuitous, though; I could not see how they are helping the exposition. And, most distressing of all, I was left uncertain of what Pratchett's message is.
