Philosophy

Finished Sophie's world today. Nice book. Not earthshattering for me, but very nice to get a history of philosophy. There were a few things that hadn't been previously covered with me, so I'm glad I've been introduced to those.

It would be nice to read the wordplay in the original. It reads like there is some there, and I feel vaguely left out at not experiencing it. Hazards of being monolingual. I do pick up scraps of language here and there, but only enough to get me in trouble.

I've read a couple of Gaardner's books. I am not sure I like them. A book that I like, I want to read again and again. These were provocative, somewhat stimulating on the first going-over, but they did not leave me with a desire to re-explore.

Wordplay, definitely. Finnish being an entirely different sort of language altogether I was suprprised that the translator had managed to concote quite plausible ones in her work. (I've seen snippets of TV adaptation of Sophie in Swedish, so I have a few points of comparison.)

It does feel like a book where there will not be much added nuance on a re-read.

I could probably send you a paperback, if you want to, although I liked his Vita Brevis better.

Thank you for the thought, but I am not sure I would ever do anything with it other than look at it occasionally.
