I leave the lid down because of paranoia that my cats will fall in. Besides, Spot is inordinately fond of perching on the toilet seat and waiting for me to leave the shower.

I leave the seat up because my cat likes drinking from it. Silly kitling, but as sometimes she drops food and stuff in the actual water dish, I want her to have something relatively fresh that she gets to drink from.

I would not put it past her to learn how to flush to get a fresh batch of water.
