Had a good break with Loren and the Old Cat Lady Geek. The Old Cat Lady Geek was talking about her plans for a program to teach cats the keyboard, the alphabet, some simple words, and to type their own names to log in.

Helping cats figure out how to interact with technological society sans humans and their opposable thumbs? Tantamount to aiding in the extinction of the human race.

Cats are only keeping us around because they can't change the litter box, open cans, or operate doorknobs.

Yes, but computer-controlled robots don't smell as interesting, don't snuggle as well, and are less of a challenge to psychologically control/crush.

True enough. But that's basically "being kept around for our amusement value". Which is dubious security at best--the time may come when it would be more amusing to obliterate us in some particularly slow and playful fashion.

And, y'know, we're talking about *cats* here.
