In a locked post, an LJ-friend discussed comfort food -- not in any great debating style, just mentioned "These are my comfort foods -- what are yours?" It's a nice comfortable little discussion, and leads to recipe-swapping and ideas for creative expansion of menu.

My comfort foods include:
Mama's beef stew, homemade pizza, a salad fixed just the right way, with enough vinegar to make my nose sweat, Trader Joe's chocolate covered orange sticks, chocolate milk with Irish Cream, Campbell's bean with bacon soup with cheese and seven splashes of Tabasco sauce, Denny's coffee with 2 sugars and 2 French Vanilla creamers, parmesan cheese mixed with salt and vinegar, cold left-over London Broil the way my father cooks it (grilled with "Secret Sauce" over alder coals) with green olives, chocolate chip cookie dough, plain baby carrots (about a pound and a half at a time), frozen burritos, open-face grilled cheese sandwiches with sliced tomatoes, salt, and dill on top, red bean jelly, Ben & Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk ice cream, fresh ripe red cherries, corned beef hash with cheese and mushrooms, egg drop soup, potstickers, orange chicken over rice, and nectarines.

Walkers cheese and onion crisps.

See, for most of the time that I lived in Merchiston Crescent, before E arrived, the local supermarket that was within walking distance had an offer on them of some sort - sometimes it was buy one 12-pack, get another free, sometimes it was buy two 6-packs, get a third, sometimes it was 18 for the price of 12, but there was almost always /something/.

Crisps are incredibly easy to munch on when you're hungry, and depressed, and don't want to move out of your room.

E had randomly bought a 6-pack of them the day before my last exam, and I munched the lot when I came home.

My comfort foods: Haagen-Dazs ice-cream (Dulce De Leche or Pralines and Cream), popovers, Green & Blacks Dark 70% Chocolate, Pizza Hut pizza, white frosted homemade cake aka birthday cake, Mexican food in general, black olives, Brie cheese, pecan pie, homemade bread, freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies, bacon sandwiches, peppermint tea (I often nip down to the cafe at work on my afternoon break to grab some to calm me down), medium rare steak with new potatoes, grilled chicken with mashed potatoes, grilled cheese on toast, chicken noodle soup, V8 juice, very milky, very sweet coffee, orange chicken with rice, beef with broccoli on rice, cinnamon rolls, Doritos with guacamole, hot buttered popcorn, cold Twix, Mars, and Snickers bars, and apple juice!

Oh, wow! I've always described Irish Cream as "chocolate milk with a kick," but I've never thought to actually mix them! I will have to try that sometime soon. *nods*

Egg drop soup is one of the things I use to judge Chinese restaurants.

I don't know that I have any "comfort foods" anymore. I used to love my mother's chicken tetrazzini, but she's started using a few different ingredients in the last few years, & it's just not the same. :(

I learned how to make egg drop soup when I was about fourteen, though my skills have gotten rusty now.

Ooo! I thought of one comfort food that I don't get nearly often enough: Mum's tea cookies. They're sort of like British tea biscuits, but much thicker & softer. Not sweet, like typical American sugar cookies. There's not much to the recipe, but I don't have it handy. Galoot tried to make them once, but he rolled the dough much too thickly (if I'd been there when he made them, I could've probably prevented that).

Cream of Pumpkin Soup, Puree of White winter vegis (mashed potatoes with celery root, fennel bulb, and a few other things), see's candies, and dad's oatmeal cookies with almond.
