And that's a LOT of assorted sharp things that people spaced and took to the airport. Betcha my favorite screwdriver's in there, or was already sold.... (Sis spaced and left my favorite screwdriver in her bag when she was flying out.)

I disapprove of confiscation on general principles. I call it "theft".

Unfortunately, if the choice is 'give up the knife/whatever' or 'give up the flight', almost everyone will leave the knife behind.

Since it's hard to imagine that anyone flying doesn't know that you can't take a knife on board these days, it might help to think of it as a stupidity tax. ;o)

I'd probably more accurately call it a "very careless packing" penalty, because I'd guess that a good 80 to 90 percent of the inclusions of sharp things in the carry-on items would be unintentional -- I know that I have to be at least slightly obsessive-compulsive in that I empty out my purse/backpack entirely before packing it for a flight, under any normal circumstances.
