The joining-approval is chiefly to keep out spambots (we've had at least one adjectivegirlname spammer attempt to join already) and make sure certain elements who have an unfavorable wank-to-productivity ratio stay out after they're tossed out on their ear (Dawn should be able to let you in to my journal to see one post recently deleted that violated the acid test of "doesn't want to make the moderators vomit on the shoes of the offender then beat them with a bat").
