"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sit stunned at this outburst of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits at his desk, head in hands.

And on a completely unrelated note, do you know of any lj community for decent chat about matters of etiquette? I keep having tricky situations land my way that can be resolved with much hashing over by others of like minds. I've noticed you do the same sometimes, so I was hoping you'd know of something.

Other than that, nalidoll might or might not know of an appropriate forum. She is of the school of thought that one has to Know the Rules in order to properly flout them, and does abide by most classic courtesies except when they Just Don't Make Sense.

For just discussion of manners of Obscure Type, perhaps not. For combination discussion of manners, advice column, rant box, and the like... I'd say I'd want to at least watch it!

I think the crucial thing would be making it Googleable, with the right keywords that Jane Average might use to look up the situation, thus directing her to a resource where That Sort of Thing has already been covered. For example, not everyone knows how to introduce their "um... friend" at parties, or how to react when being introduced to an um... friend, or deal with a status-conscious preen of Sidhe-lords (not all of whom get along) at a gathering, who to bring gifts for at a multi-party bonding....

Etiquette with otherkin would need it's own group, just to keep harassers at bay. And if you did that, there might not be enough people. Then you have to consider that most of the otherkin interested would probably be sidhe. Do you know what happened last time somebody tried to do an lj community for sidhe?

If someone is harrassing 'kin in a goddamn ettiquite group, then they need to be fucking ejected posthaste. And given the community, there have got to be ettiquite issues that don't come up for humans -- like how to explain it to a human, how to attempt to pass as human, how to avoid offense if your 'kin and their 'kin don't get along, but you have to get along with them...

Have you ever seen Alice (tatteredmallion or Amberite) explain otherkin to humans? *That* is something to watch. I've seen him/her do it at a cocktail party.

The time I observed it, I was in a cocktail party and had run off to renew my acquaintance with a lovely young elven lady by the name of Kiara and her husband. Next thing we hear over the conversation is "Oh, you want to know what otherkin are! Well, there's a couple other people who are here-- Kiara! Brendan!"
Kiara and I fervently began to declare ourselves uninvolved in this conversation, while trying our best to blend in with the sofa cushions.
What followed was watching Alice convince a group of adult humans that believing oneself to be a pixie is a perfectly logical and rational belief. Enough so that we forgave the actions which led us to do our best imitation of spare throw pillows.

And I'm sure otherkin etiquette would have been tackled on a sidhe community-- if the last one I saw hadn't literally degenerated into nothing but a group of people telling eachother how pretty they were.

Y'know, I think that this would actually go into something else better than an LJ community. elysianmusings and I were talking about starting up a Geek Housekeeping website, and I think that inclusion of a Geek/Freak/Alternative/'Kin etiquette section (heck, a normal human etiquette section) would be a good thing.

Hell, I could also cover some of the general host/essly things done with an alaternative/geek flair-- aka what to do when you may at any given time have ten vegans over for dinner on very short notice.
