I went over there looking for "cut", directed by Google. I wanted to make sure of the difference between the cut direct and the cut indirect. I found, as well, the cut celestial and the cut infernal. I can say with some certainty that I either employed the cut direct or the cut indirect upon yaksha42 after a Certain Incident came to light. At the time, I thought it was the cut direct. Now, I'm not so sure. I looked in his direction as he walked in and failed to see him, without ostentatiously looking away.
*nod* the cut direct is characterized by an Unsubtle avoidance of the other party, involving physically removing yourself (or at least turning your back).
I had someone in my extended social circle start by giving my an indirect cut... I was prepared to overlook this until she made it into a cut direct. She is still on my "short list".
IIRC, the cut direct cannot be mistaken for shortsightedness, deafness, distraction, or preoccupation. The cut indirect can.
...
And there's a dreadfully punny thing brewing involving the <lj-cut>, though I'm not sure what. Perhaps the LJ Cut Direct is the <lj-cut> itself, and the LJ Cut Indirect is the so-called "fake LJ cut", a link that counterfeits the cut (as follows...)

I'm a bit frightened by just how much of that I know.
It does explain why people sometimes have trouble following what I am saying, I suppose.
(I think you'd like the dictionaries I have a tendency to collect or read. The more "outdated", the better.)
