Guilty as tested...

River, my sister Narcissa's fiance, introduced me to hentai long long ago. I was hooked. I must admit, I get more out of nice pretty drawings and stories than I do out of live-action things. I suppose it's because I get into the storylines, and a lot of the porn industry flicks are just about the fucking, not about the storyline. There's something about a good story and good art that makes or breaks an experience.
And yes, I read fanfic too. M/S R used to be my favorite: Mulder/Scully Romance.
Now I seem to have gotten into Harry Potter fic, because certain portrayals of a not-so-young Draco Malfoy turn my insides the same way they get turned around Darkside...

I tend to gravitate towards fandoms where the majority of the stories are excellent quality, so that the ones you have to skip are the unusual ones. Most of these tend to be slash; I'm not sure why. The Sentinel is a fandom of extraordinary writing quality, both the slash AND the gen, surprisingly. The gen isn't as much fun simply because there's no romance involved: there never was a consistent love interest for either of the guys in the show, because the fans always complained they got in the way of the relationship between the guys (whether you thought that was a surpassing friendship or love; either way, the girls got in the way. :)
Due South also has fabulous writing, in general, and again, the slash is the way to go, for the same reason. The show was about the guys.
Highlander...varies. There's a large number of high quality writers in that fandom, and you can even get some decent gen romance (though that frequently involves OFCs, but you can find some really GOOD OFCs in HL, unlike most fandoms), but you have to find the authors and go to their websites, because there's ALSO a high number of shitty stuff, so the lists aren't a good place to be. Or at least they weren't when I was still looking on them, several years back. (My favourite fanfic author of any fandom happens to be in this fandom, actually,
I occasionally wander through other fandoms of lesser quality, to see if I can find the gem in the rubbish. I like SG-1, because I love the characters, but in general, the writing quality is bad. I tend to stick with Xovers by authors I trust. Same for the Buffy; love the characters, hate the writing.

I'm surprised that I can even remember how it was that I found the fandom. That was how I got hooked, though...
When I searched, I happened to have hit upon a link that was on a "best of" personal favorites site. Said site has since closed down, but not before I got an idea of how good the good ones could be. They had links to the Gossamer Project and I found some very, very good ones there, and learned how to sort out for the good ones...
It's all in the introduction, I think. There was, I remember, a very good BDSM Mulder at IOHO, but drat if I could remember how to get there...

Kris and Rhiannon are both fabulous in that they actually put notes at the end of their stories, good notes. Kris edges Rhi out on this, though. Kris' stories have lots of real-life data in them (she's a professor, of history I think; I'm sure on the prof, not on the subject). Her series going through the greater arcana of the Tarot is absolutely FABULOUS and if you have any interest in Buddhism, or the history of religions in general, her stories interweave so much actual TEACHING in a seamless, flawless, PAINLESS manner, that they're worth it for that alone. Not to mention that her writing is fabulous enough that she actually makes me believe the Richie/Methos pairing, which no one else could do.
DL Witherspoon is another favourite fanfic author of mine...she tends to near-deify her favourite character, though, but she does it deftly enough that they're still fascinating stories.

Her stories are gen, though, and not even het-smut. Pure and utter PLOT, though. ^_^ She mostly does Sentinel, though she has a small but interesting Highlander series, and several fascinating crossovers with TS and Homicide: Life on the Streets, La Femme Nikita, and a few others.
Most slash readers agree that if you ignore the occasional "statements of heterosexuality", all her stories are as slashy as
