Are you doing it from the plain text editor or from the rich text editor? What are some situations where you have tried to put it in and it's eaten it?
Ah, I see that rt_bugs has found the source of the problem.
"<3" by itself, with nothing else in there, gets eaten up by a piece of programming that's behaving badly. Just put a space in with your heart, or use ♥ (<hearts;).
