I remember a time when that's all you had to do it through, basically. You had to telnet to machine you had an account on and then run the IRC client from there. That or you ran it on the command line at the terminal.

I also used to MUD/MUSH/MUCK through direct telnet.

All this predates widespread public Internet access by a number of years.

I rather like the look and feel of a plain ol' telnet window doing stuff. But then, I do sometimes prefer words over pictures.
