IMO, Valdemar _is_ candy, aside from the author's attitude regarding fanfiction.

I was describing it as "Feels like Valdemar, except not sugar-coated."

Also, I was describing Valdemar as "Marshmallow fluff mixed with sand, and calling it concrete."

Ooh, cool! I've just realised I've actually read the first two Rihannsu books way back when and loved them; now I need to read the others! (There was an era when my payment for any household thing was 1-2 Star Trek novels. Alas, I eventually gave them all away to someone who was still head-over-heels about the fandom after I'd lost interest, but I still have a few that I particularly liked. Those are not among them, however.)
